Event Description: “It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child...” This famous quote from Pablo Picasso will be discussed and illustrated, giving viewers insights into the meaning of abstraction, cubism and modern art. The rivalry and friendship between Picasso and Henri Matisse inspired both men to create new ways of looking at our world. Matisse’s mastery of the expressive language of color and Picasso’s brilliant simplification of shapes will be discussed in detail. These lectures will explain how the history of Europe of the early 20th century influenced new, creative thinking in the arts.
