Event Description: In his fifth decade of military service, this former commander of Fort Myers, Florida, suddenly found himself thrust into situations where the future of the United States was at risk, not once, but twice. Fighting the Confederates on the sands of Florida before suppressing rioters in the streets of New York City, he successfully defended the Union, yet his accomplishments are unknown today.
