Event Description: Guests will hear from Robert Hilliard, a World War II veteran and hero, who helped to liberate Dachau concentration camp months after the war ended. Discovering sick and starving prisoners who were not receiving the proper help from the U.S. government or Jewish relief organizations, Hilliard and a fellow GI, Edward Herman, began a letter-writing campaign to seek funds from Americans. The letters caught the attention of President Harry Truman, as well as the New York Times. In addition to Hilliard’s story, guests will also hear from Steen Metz, who was deported, along with his parents, to Theresienstadt concentration camps in 1943 at 7 years of age. Losing his father to starvation after only six months in the camp, he and his mother were liberated in April 1945. Metz has shared his story with more than 12,000 people since October 2011.
