Event Description: One’s rank in a military organization is usually considered a measure of one’s professional competence and experience, but in the War Between the States, fought between opposing armies of mainly amateur citizen soldiers, how did one get promoted? This program will consider the military career of a Confederate officer, Samuel B. Pickens of South Carolina, and the impact of “states” rights on the promotion policies of the Confederate Army.
