Event Description: In 1822, David Moniac achieved two firsts: He became the first Native American and the first Alabamian to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Additionally, he demonstrated the ability of Native Americans to assimilate into Anglo-American culture. However, his short life was ended in 1836 when he died leading his battalion in a charge against Seminole Indians led by his wife’s cousin, Osceola, in the second Seminole War.
