Event Description: Hodges University's Frances Pew Hayes Center for Lifelong Learning is hosting Dr. Ted Childress, who will present "The Alabama Volunteers in the Second Seminole War, 1836." The United States’ attempt to remove the Native American residents from the Florida territory resulted in a conflict known as the Second Seminole War. The regular military forces of the nation were already spread too thin to accomplish the task, so the Andrew Jackson administration called for volunteers from the militias of the surrounding states to assist the army already positioned in Florida. Among the first to respond were volunteers from Alabama who served for three months in 1836. A description of their brief service provides an idea of the problems inherent in fighting the Seminoles with citizen soldiers in this unfortunate war. $250 (Annual); $125 (Seasonal); $25 (per class)
