Event Description: Hodges University's Frances Pew Hayes Center for Lifelong Learning is hosting Dr. Ted Childress, who will present "The Second Seminole War." From 1835 until 1842, the United States engaged Native American inhabitants of the Florida territory in an attempt to enforce the provisions of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, which provided for the removal of Indian nations from east of the Mississippi River to a “permanent Indian frontier” west of the river. Portions of the Seminole and other Indian tribes in Florida refused to emigrate and attacked United States troops sent to escort them, initiating the Second Seminole War. Elements of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps and militias of several adjoining states participated in this difficult guerrilla war, which tarnished the reputations of several general officers and ended not in victory, but in an armistice. Cost: $250 (Annual); $125 (Seasonal); $25 (per class)
