Event Description: The discipline of philosophy has been a major part of universities since the beginning. In fact, a philosopher--Plato’s Academy (where we get our word “academics”), founded the very first university in Western civilization. However, what is philosophy? What does it study, and what do philosophers actually do? In this discussion, Dr. William Cooney will provide a brief history of philosophy, explain its five major branches and discuss what philosophers are up to these days.
