Event Description: Thomas Edison first lit his Fort Myers winter home with electric lights 130 years ago. On that night, the entire town of 349 residents lined the sidewalk to see the lights. To celebrate the anniversary, the site is hosting a special grand re-opening event on November 3 from 5-8 p.m. The entire site will be open for specialty tours and presentations and the historic Banyan will be decorated with lights. Visitors and members are invited to tour the site, see the new museum exhibits and enjoy refreshments. Mayor Randy Henderson, Councilman Mike Flanders and Lee Golden, chairman of the Edison Ford board of trustees will speak starting at 6:45 p.m. Living history characters of Mr. and Mrs. Edison and Mr. and Mrs. Ford will be on site for photo opportunities. Visitors will be able to see the entire site, including the historic winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, caretaker's houses, Edison's study, the 15,000-square-foot inventions museum and the National Chemical Landmark botanic research laboratory on more than 20 acres of gardens. Specialty tours include Inside-the-Homes and Inside-the-Lab and there will be a generator presentation offered inside the museum. Also in the museum are two new exhibits: the Smithsonian Spark!Lab exhibit and the Timeline of Innovation. The Smithsonian Spark!Lab is a hands-on, interactive exhibit for families and children. A series of rotating stations with themes from vehicle construction to understanding sound waves will challenge visitors to place themselves in the mindset of an inventor. The Timeline of Innovation is a chronological exhibit of both Edison's and Ford's major inventions. The timeline highlights achievements in dozens of fields and showcases some of the most interesting artifacts. It also depicts how Edison, Ford and others built on earlier innovations to create their own inventions. Lee County residents will receive $5 off admission with valid photo identification.
