Florida Child in Need of Extremely Rare Blood- OneBlood Leading Worldwide Search to Locate Donors 12/3/2018 8:00 AM - 12/3/2119

(Orlando, Florida December 3, 2018) OneBlood, the local not-for-profit blood center serving Florida and other parts of the southeast, is leading a worldwide search to find some of the rarest blood in the world. It’s needed to help save two-year-old Zainab, a South Florida girl who is battling neuroblastoma, a very aggressive form of cancer. Zainab’s blood is extremely rare because she is missing a common antigen that most people carry on their red blood cells. The antigen is called “Indian B” (Inb). For a person to be a possible match for Zainab, they must also be missing the Indian B antigen, or the little girl's body will reject the blood. Locating people who are missing the Indian B antigen comes down to genetics. • Statistically, the only people who are likely to be a match for Zainab are people of Pakistani, Indian or Iranian descent. Of these populations, less than 4% of the people are actually missing the Indian B antigen. To be a match for Zainab a donor must meet the following criteria: • Must be exclusively Pakistani, Indian or Iranian descent – meaning the donor’s birth parents are both 100% Pakistani, Indian or Iranian • Must be blood type “O” or “A” • All donations for Zainab must be coordinated with OneBlood in advance to ensure the additional compatibility testing is performed. OneBlood is working closely with other blood centers and the American Rare Donor Program (ARDP), an organization that searches the world for rare blood donors. So far, three matching donors have been located, including a donor that ARDP located in the United Kingdom, near London. It’s the first time OneBlood has ever received an international donor for a local patient. The other two matching donors are from the United States. While it’s promising the three donors have been located, additional donors are needed. Zainab will need blood transfusions for the foreseeable future. To support her long-term blood needs, the search is on to find at least seven to ten compatible donors. OneBlood is sharing Zainab’s story in the hopes more people who meet the specific donor criteria will come forward to donate for the little girl. OneBlood is conducting all compatibility testing of potential donors. So far, more than 1,000 local donations, as well as donations from other parts of the country have been tested and no additional matches have been identified. Leadership Cape Coral is a proactive 13 week program designed to help you learn about the infrastructure that drives our city, rub elbows with local dignitaries, tour facilities not open to the general public, learn how to support our community, become part of the elite core of chamber members and establish a bond and form a network with your classmates.

Under the direction of the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral, Leadership Cape Coral has been formed to develop year after year a pool of leaders that share a common knowledge and vision for the city.

This intensive hands-on program begins with a kick-off retreat in August on a Friday and requires an overnight stay until Saturday. Each day will runs each Thursday following, completing with a Graduation gala in November. The program is held at various locations throughout the city and county.

Offered several times each season, Etiquette classes are for children ages 6-12. These classes are two-hour sessions in good manners and teach proper introduction, handshakes and dining etiquette during a three-course meal. Each student will receive a workbook and certificate of completion. All classes run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Parents should plan to drop children off for the class.

Greetings from Cape Coral, FL — The German American Social Club of Cape Coral proudly announces the 40th Annual Cape Coral Oktoberfest, Southwest Florida’s signature celebration of German culture, cuisine, and community spirit. The festival returns for two weekends — October 17–19 and October 24–26, 2025 — at 2101 SW Pine Island Road, Cape Coral.

For four decades, Oktoberfest has brought together families and friends from across Florida, the US, and the World to enjoy the sights, sounds, and flavors of Bavaria. This year’s milestone celebration promises to be the biggest yet, featuring authentic German food, imported beer, bands from Bavaria, and nonstop dancing — from traditional polkas to the Bobb, Fliegerlied, and of course, the chicken dance.

The festival grounds will feature three music stages, three dance floors, and continuous performances from our German bands and popular local musicians. Guests can enjoy homemade-style dishes such as schnitzel, bratwurst, and pretzels, along with American favorites from local food trucks, Or enjoy a traditional meal inside the Von Steuben Hall. As always, a full selection of German and domestic beverages, and this year, local craft breweries join in the fun!

Families will love the carnival area, rides, and games, while shoppers browse handcrafted goods, souvenirs, and Oktoberfest collectibles. Admission is $8 in advance or $10 at the gate, with free admission for children 12 and under. Parking is free, and the event runs rain or shine.

Join us as we kick off the holiday season at the City of Cape Coral’s Annual Trunk or Treat & Halloween Movie. This free Halloween event offers a safe environment to come together and celebrate the start of the holiday season, including candy giveaways (while supplies last), interactive inflatables, a trackless train, a drone show, and a Halloween costume contest on the front lawn of City Hall. This year's Halloween movie will be "Monster House", and following the movie, a spectacular drone show will be lighting up the sky over City Hall. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the festivities!

Anyone with children 5 years and younger may join us at 5:00 p.m. to enjoy the trunk displays and candy at their own leisure. Starting at 6:00 p.m., children of all ages will be welcome. Don’t forget to bring your own bags!

See the homes decorated with quilts featuring intricate, whimsical designs at the “Airing of the Quilts” quilt show. Dozens of quilts from the Southwest Florida Quilters Guild will be on display, suspended from clothes lines between the palms in front of the historic homes. Quilters Guild participants will also have quilts available for sale.

Certified quilt appraiser Lars Cain, will be on site and conducting appraisals from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. His vast experience includes work at the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution. Visitors may bring antique quilts for assessment. Verbal appraisals will be offered for $25 and the fee for a written appraisal will be $35 per quilt.

The quilt show is included with admission. Admission is free for Edison Ford members

Fresh, local & healthy fruits and veggies, including Certified Organic produce, are the core of the market along with homemade and handmade foods and crafts. Fresh baked breads & pastries, homemade pickles, jams & jellies, Gulf fresh seafood, fresh meats, homemade pet treats, handcrafted soaps, essential oils, local honey, made-on-site guacamole, fresh, cut flowers, native plants & trees are just some of the fantastic products available.

Since shopping and eating seem to go so well together, the market has endless options. A food truck court and tent vendors offer BBQ, Crepes, Empanadas, Mexican food, German street food and healthy options like Kombucha, health smoothies, Acai bowls and salads.

Each season we do our best to give back to the community by offering spaces for non-profits, schools and community groups. Another way we give back is by offering the ability for our EBT/SNAP customers to shop for healthy and affordable food options. Autumn is the ideal time to start your vegetable and herb gardens here in Southwest Florida. This class will cover choosing ideal vegetables and disease resistant varieties, tips for dealing with pests, as well as soil and nutrition. All participants will receive a 20% discount coupon good for live plant purchases in our Garden Shoppe. Come prepared with a notebook, sun protection and water.
