Event Description: Hodges University's Frances Pew Hayes Center for Lifelong Learning is hosting Dr. Ted Childress, who will present "The Creek Mounted Volunteers in the Second Seminole War." The Indian Removal Act of 1830 required all Native American nations to move west of the Mississippi River. The Creek Nation was due to be removed, but the Jackson administration offered to provide a one-year delay if the Creeks would send a regiment of warriors to fight their Seminole cousins in Florida for a year. They would be armed and paid as U.S. soldiers, and additionally, they would be able to keep any booty captured by them such as livestock and slaves. The Creeks accepted the offer, but their experience in the war, along with the failure of the government to keep its promises, would negatively impact U.S.-Creek relations for decades. $250 (Annual); $125 (Seasonal); $25 (per class)
