Florida Child in Need of Extremely Rare Blood- OneBlood Leading Worldwide Search to Locate Donors 12/3/2018 8:00 AM - 12/3/2119

(Orlando, Florida December 3, 2018) OneBlood, the local not-for-profit blood center serving Florida and other parts of the southeast, is leading a worldwide search to find some of the rarest blood in the world. It’s needed to help save two-year-old Zainab, a South Florida girl who is battling neuroblastoma, a very aggressive form of cancer. Zainab’s blood is extremely rare because she is missing a common antigen that most people carry on their red blood cells. The antigen is called “Indian B” (Inb). For a person to be a possible match for Zainab, they must also be missing the Indian B antigen, or the little girl's body will reject the blood. Locating people who are missing the Indian B antigen comes down to genetics. • Statistically, the only people who are likely to be a match for Zainab are people of Pakistani, Indian or Iranian descent. Of these populations, less than 4% of the people are actually missing the Indian B antigen. To be a match for Zainab a donor must meet the following criteria: • Must be exclusively Pakistani, Indian or Iranian descent – meaning the donor’s birth parents are both 100% Pakistani, Indian or Iranian • Must be blood type “O” or “A” • All donations for Zainab must be coordinated with OneBlood in advance to ensure the additional compatibility testing is performed. OneBlood is working closely with other blood centers and the American Rare Donor Program (ARDP), an organization that searches the world for rare blood donors. So far, three matching donors have been located, including a donor that ARDP located in the United Kingdom, near London. It’s the first time OneBlood has ever received an international donor for a local patient. The other two matching donors are from the United States. While it’s promising the three donors have been located, additional donors are needed. Zainab will need blood transfusions for the foreseeable future. To support her long-term blood needs, the search is on to find at least seven to ten compatible donors. OneBlood is sharing Zainab’s story in the hopes more people who meet the specific donor criteria will come forward to donate for the little girl. OneBlood is conducting all compatibility testing of potential donors. So far, more than 1,000 local donations, as well as donations from other parts of the country have been tested and no additional matches have been identified. The Edison Jungle Art Exhibit will be open in the Historic Edison Caretaker's House until May 19. Thomas Edison called his lush estate here in Fort Myers his ''jungle" because of the diversity of plant life that thrived. The exhibit features 30 award-winning artists from the southeastern United States. They were asked to interpret the Edison and Ford families' love of the natural environment of Florida. A wide variety of mediums are represented, including oil paint, water color, photography and sculpture. This exhibit is included with admission.

The Garden Talk this month is appropriately titled "Orchid Techniques." Summer is a great time to establish orchids with the rainy season upon us. The group will walk the property to view the orchids and discuss varieties of orchids, how to match for proper sun exposure and trees, as well as, fertilization techniques. If you have questions about orchids, we will have time after the class to discuss. There is an average of ten ribbon cuttings per month. We encourage all Ambassadors to attend as many ribbon cuttings as their time allows. To honor the men and women who have served our country, we are offering free admission to United States veterans on Memorial Day, May 27. Free admission includes a self-guided audio tour of the historic homes, gardens, laboratory and museum. Veterans will also receive a 10% discount on retail items purchased in the Museum Store, Ford Cottage Shoppe, Garden Shoppe and Edison Ford Shoppe at Bell Tower Shops. To receive free admission, veterans must present a VA identification card or their DD214 papers.

Presented by the SWFL Military Museum & Library in partnership with the City of Cape Coral Parks & Recreation Department will be the Inaugural Memorial Day Parade on Cape Coral Pkwy. This event is to Celebrate, Honor, and Remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation and freedom worldwide. The military museum felt it was time the Purple Heart city of Cape Coral host a Memorial Day Parade. The Parade is also dedicated to long time volunteer at the museum who passed away last year, Roy Leo. Roy Leo was well known and beloved in the community. As part of the Greatest Generation, Roy served during WW2, the Korean, Vietnam, and part of the Gulf War. He was a highly decorated veteran being a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. This parade is in remembrance of Roy and others who have served in our Nation's Armed Forces. The parade will start on Del Prado Blvd and Cape Coral Parkway (by Holiday Inn) traveling Westbound on Cape Coral Parkway. It will end on Leonard Street (by the Military Museum). Join us at the Museum for the after party. After the parade we will also be hosting a luncheon at the SWFL Military Museum & Library. There will be food, beverages and entertainment. Please join us for a day to celebrate and honor the memory of those that have fallen in defense of our freedom.

The Board of Directors is made up of 24 chamber members who have been elected to serve 3-year terms and up to 15 trustees serving a 1-year term. The Board of Directors are the member representative who have the fiduciary responsibility and are the policy makers that direct the organization. Duties include making sure the organization has the financial resources to operation. They are also responsible for creation of the annual business plan to meet the current and future needs of the business community.

This committee creates the policies, positions and direction for the organization often with advisement of other committees and task forces. Board members are encouraged to participate in one or more chamber committees so that they can report committee activities to the Board of Directors on a monthly basis. Board members are also encouraged to attend membership functions and further the communication of chamber issues. Time investment for Board of Directors is usually 4 - 5 hours monthly.

The mission of the Government Affairs Committee is to influence the development of policies and regulations that aid in the creating of regional opportunities for job creation, business growth and financial success and the creation of new market links and opportunities for Chamber members.

The Government Affairs Committee is the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral’s legislative program, whose volunteer members examines, analyze and monitor relevant legislation of the governmental bodies. We monitor economic and regional issues of local and state governments that could have an impact on the business community. The committee maintains a continuing dialogue with elected and appointed government officials from the city and the county, as well as various quasi-judicial agencies. Our overall focus is on supporting legislation and activities that benefit the economic development and overall quality of life in Florida and, in particular, Cape Coral and Lee County.

The committee meets monthly to talk about issues of interest and if action is warranted, gives recommendations to the chamber’s board of directors. After the board adopts a position or policy, the Government Affairs Committee participates in disseminating the information to the membership and begins discussions with or presents positions to the appropriate officials. All chamber members are encouraged to bring their ideas or concerns about economic development in our region to any member of the committee.

Leadership Cape Coral is a proactive 13 week program designed to help you learn about the infrastructure that drives our city, rub elbows with local dignitaries, tour facilities not open to the general public, learn how to support our community, become part of the elite core of chamber members and establish a bond and form a network with your classmates.

Under the direction of the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral, Leadership Cape Coral has been formed to develop year after year a pool of leaders that share a common knowledge and vision for the city.

This intensive hands-on program begins with a kick-off retreat beginning at 1:00 pm on Friday, August 9th at The Pink Shell on Fort Myers Beach and concludes on Saturday, August 10th at 11:00 am. Each day will runs each Thursday following, completing with a Graduation gala on Friday, November 15th. The program is held at various locations throughout the city and county.
