Florida Child in Need of Extremely Rare Blood- OneBlood Leading Worldwide Search to Locate Donors 12/3/2018 8:00 AM - 12/3/2119

(Orlando, Florida December 3, 2018) OneBlood, the local not-for-profit blood center serving Florida and other parts of the southeast, is leading a worldwide search to find some of the rarest blood in the world. It’s needed to help save two-year-old Zainab, a South Florida girl who is battling neuroblastoma, a very aggressive form of cancer. Zainab’s blood is extremely rare because she is missing a common antigen that most people carry on their red blood cells. The antigen is called “Indian B” (Inb). For a person to be a possible match for Zainab, they must also be missing the Indian B antigen, or the little girl's body will reject the blood. Locating people who are missing the Indian B antigen comes down to genetics. • Statistically, the only people who are likely to be a match for Zainab are people of Pakistani, Indian or Iranian descent. Of these populations, less than 4% of the people are actually missing the Indian B antigen. To be a match for Zainab a donor must meet the following criteria: • Must be exclusively Pakistani, Indian or Iranian descent – meaning the donor’s birth parents are both 100% Pakistani, Indian or Iranian • Must be blood type “O” or “A” • All donations for Zainab must be coordinated with OneBlood in advance to ensure the additional compatibility testing is performed. OneBlood is working closely with other blood centers and the American Rare Donor Program (ARDP), an organization that searches the world for rare blood donors. So far, three matching donors have been located, including a donor that ARDP located in the United Kingdom, near London. It’s the first time OneBlood has ever received an international donor for a local patient. The other two matching donors are from the United States. While it’s promising the three donors have been located, additional donors are needed. Zainab will need blood transfusions for the foreseeable future. To support her long-term blood needs, the search is on to find at least seven to ten compatible donors. OneBlood is sharing Zainab’s story in the hopes more people who meet the specific donor criteria will come forward to donate for the little girl. OneBlood is conducting all compatibility testing of potential donors. So far, more than 1,000 local donations, as well as donations from other parts of the country have been tested and no additional matches have been identified. Leadership Cape Coral is a proactive 13 week program designed to help you learn about the infrastructure that drives our city, rub elbows with local dignitaries, tour facilities not open to the general public, learn how to support our community, become part of the elite core of chamber members and establish a bond and form a network with your classmates.

Under the direction of the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral, Leadership Cape Coral has been formed to develop year after year a pool of leaders that share a common knowledge and vision for the city.

This intensive hands-on program begins with a kick-off retreat beginning at 1:00 pm on Friday, August 9th at The Pink Shell on Fort Myers Beach and concludes on Saturday, August 10th at 11:00 am. Every month the Ambassadors have reserved seating at the General Membership meeting/luncheon. They network with new members and expose their own business during the process. There is an average of ten ribbon cuttings per month. We encourage all Ambassadors to attend as many ribbon cuttings as their time allows. While much of the nutrients that feed blue-green algae come from outside of Lee County, about 1/3 of the nutrients in the Caloosahatchee are contributed from communities located west of Lake O. Most of the complex solutions are in the hands of governments and regulators, but there is something that average citizens can do to help reduce nutrient pollution. This presentation will review some easy basic steps that businesses and homeowners can take to protect our local waterways. We will take a fun and interactive approach to the subject and the audience will walk away with some quick and easy lawn care and gardening tips that will empower them to be part of the solution!

In celebration of National Honey Bee Day on August 17, the public is invited to learn about bees and native plants for pollinators at Edison and Ford Winter Estates. The days' itinerary includes a live honey extraction demonstration, a honey bee lecture by David Westervelt with the Florida State Beekeepers Association, and Tony Mauriello and Kara Tyler-Julian from the Coccoloba Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will give a presentation on Florida native plants for pollinators. There will be local honey available for sale and tasting and informational tables with guests from the Florida Native Plant Society, Florida State Beekeepers Association, and Solitary Bee Homes. The market is located at 5785 Cape Harbour Dr., south of Cape Coral Pkwy., and will be open every Saturday thru September.

The Cape Coral Farmers Market will re-open in its Club Square location in downtown Cape Coral in October.

The Board of Directors is made up of 24 chamber members who have been elected to serve 3-year terms and up to 15 trustees serving a 1-year term. The Board of Directors are the member representative who have the fiduciary responsibility and are the policy makers that direct the organization. Duties include making sure the organization has the financial resources to operation. They are also responsible for creation of the annual business plan to meet the current and future needs of the business community.

This committee creates the policies, positions and direction for the organization often with advisement of other committees and task forces. Board members are encouraged to participate in one or more chamber committees so that they can report committee activities to the Board of Directors on a monthly basis. Board members are also encouraged to attend membership functions and further the communication of chamber issues. Time investment for Board of Directors is usually 4 - 5 hours monthly.

Join Automotive Curator, James Moss, for a discussion on one of the most popular vehicles in our collection. This will also include a demonstration of how to start the Model T. Every few years, Ford would have new features added to the vehicle and it was returned to Edison. The car is now in display in the museum and presented to Edison in 1916. This program is free for Edison Ford members and included with admission for non-members.

The mission of the Government Affairs Committee is to influence the development of policies and regulations that aid in the creating of regional opportunities for job creation, business growth and financial success and the creation of new market links and opportunities for Chamber members.

The Government Affairs Committee is the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral’s legislative program, whose volunteer members examines, analyze and monitor relevant legislation of the governmental bodies. We monitor economic and regional issues of local and state governments that could have an impact on the business community. The committee maintains a continuing dialogue with elected and appointed government officials from the city and the county, as well as various quasi-judicial agencies. Our overall focus is on supporting legislation and activities that benefit the economic development and overall quality of life in Florida and, in particular, Cape Coral and Lee County.

The committee meets monthly to talk about issues of interest and if action is warranted, gives recommendations to the chamber’s board of directors. After the board adopts a position or policy, the Government Affairs Committee participates in disseminating the information to the membership and begins discussions with or presents positions to the appropriate officials. All chamber members are encouraged to bring their ideas or concerns about economic development in our region to any member of the committee.
