Florida Child in Need of Extremely Rare Blood- OneBlood Leading Worldwide Search to Locate Donors 12/3/2018 8:00 AM - 12/3/2119

(Orlando, Florida December 3, 2018) OneBlood, the local not-for-profit blood center serving Florida and other parts of the southeast, is leading a worldwide search to find some of the rarest blood in the world. It’s needed to help save two-year-old Zainab, a South Florida girl who is battling neuroblastoma, a very aggressive form of cancer. Zainab’s blood is extremely rare because she is missing a common antigen that most people carry on their red blood cells. The antigen is called “Indian B” (Inb). For a person to be a possible match for Zainab, they must also be missing the Indian B antigen, or the little girl's body will reject the blood. Locating people who are missing the Indian B antigen comes down to genetics. • Statistically, the only people who are likely to be a match for Zainab are people of Pakistani, Indian or Iranian descent. Of these populations, less than 4% of the people are actually missing the Indian B antigen. To be a match for Zainab a donor must meet the following criteria: • Must be exclusively Pakistani, Indian or Iranian descent – meaning the donor’s birth parents are both 100% Pakistani, Indian or Iranian • Must be blood type “O” or “A” • All donations for Zainab must be coordinated with OneBlood in advance to ensure the additional compatibility testing is performed. OneBlood is working closely with other blood centers and the American Rare Donor Program (ARDP), an organization that searches the world for rare blood donors. So far, three matching donors have been located, including a donor that ARDP located in the United Kingdom, near London. It’s the first time OneBlood has ever received an international donor for a local patient. The other two matching donors are from the United States. While it’s promising the three donors have been located, additional donors are needed. Zainab will need blood transfusions for the foreseeable future. To support her long-term blood needs, the search is on to find at least seven to ten compatible donors. OneBlood is sharing Zainab’s story in the hopes more people who meet the specific donor criteria will come forward to donate for the little girl. OneBlood is conducting all compatibility testing of potential donors. So far, more than 1,000 local donations, as well as donations from other parts of the country have been tested and no additional matches have been identified. January's garden class is an introduction to Florida gardening. The material will include soil, nutrition, choosing plants for a specific yard or garden; understanding the difference between invasive and exotic plants; best practices; weed identification; plant identification; state and local regulations and much more. This class experience will include classroom and field exposure, so attendees should bring a water bottle, wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen. Both classes will last approximately 2 hours. All garden classes are held in the climate controlled and accessible classroom at the Fort Myers- Lee County Garden Council Building, adjacent to Edison Ford. Ambassadors attend Ribbon Cuttings and also take part in being a mentor to new members. This is a great way to meet new prospects and welcome them to the chamber. Every month the Ambassadors have reserved seating at the General Membership meeting/luncheon. They network with new members and expose their own business during the process. There is an average of ten ribbon cuttings per month. We encourage all Ambassadors to attend as many ribbon cuttings as their time allows. The time investment for this committee can be as high as 10 hours per month depending on your level of involvement.

Mina Edison was a gracious hostess and concerned with the well being of children and the community. Following in her tradition, this two-hour etiquette class will teach etiquette and social skills. Students will gather at the Edison Caretaker's House for a lesson in good manners. This class teaches proper introduction, handshakes and dining etiquette during a three-course meal. Each student will receive a workbook and certificate of completion. Classes are taught by Suzanne Willis who teaches etiquette classes at Ritz-Carlton hotels throughout the nation. This program is $75 for Edison Ford members and $85 for non-members.

Join us for the opening reception of a new art show in the historic Edison Caretakers House. Ehren Gerhard, Gallery Director at the Alliance for the Arts, is the guest judge and will award prizes for the winning artwork. Visitors can also vote in the "People's Choice" category which will be announced at the conclusion of the show in May. Drinks and light snacks will be available. The evening will conclude with a demonstration of Ford's most well-known product, the Model T. This event is free for Edison Ford members and $10 for non-members and includes a complimentary beer or soda.

Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee will light up the sky with “Celebration in the Sky,” Saturday, Jan. 18 at 9 p.m. The fireworks display will be choreographed to lights and a custom soundtrack. “Celebration in the Sky” is the largest land-based fireworks show in Southwest Florida. The show is produced by Zambelli Fireworks, one of the largest fireworks companies in the world. A traditional outdoor Zambelli Fireworks production is a complete sensory experience unlike anything else! Zambelli’s productions are some of the largest in the world, and their displays include a variety of shells and high-intensity multi-shot devices that awe and inspire. All ages are welcome and admission is free. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs to the viewing area for the show. Food and beverage options will be available for purchase at the event.

From the signature classic songs to the unforgettable sass and soul of her voice, Tucker has paved a path in country music and beyond through an unprecedented level of success and continues her longevity today due to a natural, undeniable talent. Her style has proved to be timeless ever since she recorded her debut single “Delta Dawn,” at age 13. The single earned a Grammy nomination for “Best Female Country Vocal Performance” and launched Tucker into the national spotlight. In 1972, she earned the “Top New Female Vocalist” award by the Academy of Country Music. The 18th annual “Helping Kids with Cancer” Radiothon will be held Jan. 24 and feature on-air appeals by pediatric cancer patients, medical professionals and celebrity guests. The Radiothon airs live from Mel’s Diner, 1331 NE Pine Island Rd, Cape Coral, on Cat Country 107.1 FM, as well as CatCountry1071.iheart.com and on the iHeart Radio app, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24. Periodic updates and announcements from the Radiothon will also be shared on 95.3 FM OLZ. The Radiothon benefits Barbara’s Friends – Golisano Children’s Hospital Cancer Fund. Young patients and families battling cancer and life-threatening blood disorders face many challenges physically, emotionally and financially. Donations made to Barbara’s Friends support lifesaving cancer care for Southwest Florida children provide equipment, medical services, emergency assistance, and financial assistance through the Kimmie’s Angels Family Assistance Program so families can focus on helping their kids get well. Golisano Children’s Hospital does not deny treatment for any child as a result of their family’s inability to pay. During the 12-hour Radiothon, guests at all five Mel’s Diner locations in Southwest Florida – Bonita Springs, Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Golden Gate and Naples – can enjoy a special Radiothon breakfast for a $5 donation. Additionally, Mel’s Diner guests who become an “Angel” by making a $300 donation will receive a $100 Mel’s gift card. The Cape Coral Historical Society and Museum will host its Annual Music Festival on January 25, 2020, at Cultural Park from 11 am to 5 pm.

Formerly known as our Bluegrass Jamboree, this year’s event has been rebranded as Jammin’ in Cultural Park and will feature local acts Signal III, Soulixer and Sheena Brook.

Gates open at 11 and music begins at noon. Food trucks and vendors will be on site and, as an added bonus, the Museum will also be open to all ticket holders during the event. Jammin’ is a chance for families to gather at the Museum for an afternoon of wonderful music, great food, and fascinating history.

There are two levels of tickets available:

VIP Tickets are $40 in advance / $50 at the gate and include a meal, dessert, two drink tickets and a seat in our VIP tent.

General Admission Tickets
- Adult (aged 13 and over) are $15 in advance / $20 at the gate
- Children's tickets (aged 4-12) are $5
- Children aged 3 and under are free

The Board of Directors is made up of 24 chamber members who have been elected to serve 3-year terms and up to 15 trustees serving a 1-year term. The Board of Directors are the member representative who have the fiduciary responsibility and are the policy makers that direct the organization. Duties include making sure the organization has the financial resources to operation. They are also responsible for creation of the annual business plan to meet the current and future needs of the business community.

This committee creates the policies, positions and direction for the organization often with advisement of other committees and task forces. Board members are encouraged to participate in one or more chamber committees so that they can report committee activities to the Board of Directors on a monthly basis. Board members are also encouraged to attend membership functions and further the communication of chamber issues. Time investment for Board of Directors is usually 4 - 5 hours monthly.
