Florida Child in Need of Extremely Rare Blood- OneBlood Leading Worldwide Search to Locate Donors 12/3/2018 8:00 AM - 12/3/2119

(Orlando, Florida December 3, 2018) OneBlood, the local not-for-profit blood center serving Florida and other parts of the southeast, is leading a worldwide search to find some of the rarest blood in the world. It’s needed to help save two-year-old Zainab, a South Florida girl who is battling neuroblastoma, a very aggressive form of cancer. Zainab’s blood is extremely rare because she is missing a common antigen that most people carry on their red blood cells. The antigen is called “Indian B” (Inb). For a person to be a possible match for Zainab, they must also be missing the Indian B antigen, or the little girl's body will reject the blood. Locating people who are missing the Indian B antigen comes down to genetics. • Statistically, the only people who are likely to be a match for Zainab are people of Pakistani, Indian or Iranian descent. Of these populations, less than 4% of the people are actually missing the Indian B antigen. To be a match for Zainab a donor must meet the following criteria: • Must be exclusively Pakistani, Indian or Iranian descent – meaning the donor’s birth parents are both 100% Pakistani, Indian or Iranian • Must be blood type “O” or “A” • All donations for Zainab must be coordinated with OneBlood in advance to ensure the additional compatibility testing is performed. OneBlood is working closely with other blood centers and the American Rare Donor Program (ARDP), an organization that searches the world for rare blood donors. So far, three matching donors have been located, including a donor that ARDP located in the United Kingdom, near London. It’s the first time OneBlood has ever received an international donor for a local patient. The other two matching donors are from the United States. While it’s promising the three donors have been located, additional donors are needed. Zainab will need blood transfusions for the foreseeable future. To support her long-term blood needs, the search is on to find at least seven to ten compatible donors. OneBlood is sharing Zainab’s story in the hopes more people who meet the specific donor criteria will come forward to donate for the little girl. OneBlood is conducting all compatibility testing of potential donors. So far, more than 1,000 local donations, as well as donations from other parts of the country have been tested and no additional matches have been identified. Edison and Ford Winter Estates will be opening the riverside botanical gardens on Friday, May 29. Come see what’s blooming and walk through more than 20 acres of gardens in a park-like setting with large shade trees and a scenic river view. You will also be able to stroll outside under the porches of the historic homes and view into the interior lifestyle of Edison and Ford. The new app allows you to take the self-guided tour with narration and meander at your own pace. To ensure social distancing, guided tours are not being offered at this time. The riverside will be open Friday through Monday each week, through June. Discounted admission tickets are available for visitors and member’s guest: Adults: $1 Teens (13-19): $10 Children (6-12): $5 Children 5 years old and younger will be admitted free The museum and laboratory will remain closed at this time. No coupons or other discount will be accepted. Members get in free. Purchase tickets in advanced online at Edisonford.org The outdoor Garden Shoppe and Museum Store are also open. The number of visitors entering the indoor retail areas will be monitored to ensure enough space for social distancing. Garden staff will be on site to answer gardening questions. The museum store is stocked with unique gift items and souveniers, including books, clothing, kitchenware, kid's games and science kits, artwork from local artists, and garden art. There are also many Thomas Edison and Henry Ford signature souvenir items, such as replica lightbulbs and model Mustang cars. The Garden Shoppe offers an outdoor shopping area where guests can purchase many different kinds of plants, including flower shrubs, butterfly plants, herbs, fruit trees, Florida natives, and rare exotics. Edison and Ford Winter Estates is opening the 15,000-square-foot air-conditioned Museum and historic Botanic Research Laboratory. The Botanical Gardens and Riverside of the property will remain open. The site is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Guided tours will once again be available and limited to groups of 10 people to ensure everyone can adequately practice social distancing. Self-Guided tours are also available, and allow visitors to use an app on their personal phone along with a printed map of the site. Guests will learn about Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, while strolling more than 20 acres in a park-like setting. Visitors going on this tour are required to wear a mask. Specialty tours, including Inside-the-Homes, Automotive and Garden tours are also available. A maximum of 10 tickets will be sold for each tour and reservations must be made in advance. Visitors going on these tours are required to wear a mask. With the opening of the Museum and Laboratory, regular-priced admission tickets are in effect. Edison and Ford Winter Estates' Summer Camp registration is open. Campers will explore the “living laboratory” of the estates while the Wild Wizards teach topics in science technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM), plus history and the natural world. Campers are separated into two age groups (6-8 and 9-12). Most of the camps are available for both age groups; camps for younger students are less complex. The camps are fun, educational, and unlike other local opportunities. Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. This paleontology primer will inspire and educate campers. From Pangaea to Fort Myers, campers unearth fossils, build models, investigate teeth, and more during this fun and fast-paced camp. The cost of this program is $220 for Edison Ford members and $250 for non-members. Spots are only open for ages 6-8! In order to protect the campers and staff, several important modifications have been made. • All camps will run at less than 50% capacity. • Per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations, camp sign-in times will be staggered: ages 6-8 from 8:45 to 9 a.m. and ages 9-12 from 9 to 9:15 a.m. Sign-out times: ages 6-8 from 3:45 to 4 p.m. and ages 9-12 from 4 to 4:15 p.m. • Students who are able to do so will wear masks while in the classroom. We will allow for breaks from the mask in limited safe outdoor situations and for of course water, snack, and lunch breaks (and as needed). Social distancing guidelines will be maintained whether students are wearing masks or not, and whether they are indoors or outdoors. The mask should be washed regularly at home. If your camper is unable to wear a mask for any reason, please let us know. • Camp sign-in will take place in a car line rather than inside the museum. Each camper will receive a brief symptom and temperature check before exiting their vehicle. No campers experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 will be allowed to enter camp. • Group projects will be altered to avoid close proximity and frequent touch surfaces. • Daily cleaning protocols have been greatly enhanced. • Rigorous hand washing and sanitation routines for campers and staff will be in place. • Time spent outdoors will be increased substantially (as weather allows). • Edison Ford staff will wear masks at all times.

Edison and Ford Winter Estates' Summer Camp registration is open. Campers will explore the “living laboratory” of the estates while the Wild Wizards teach topics in science technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM), plus history and the natural world. Campers are separated into two age groups (6-8 and 9-12). Most of the camps are available for both age groups; camps for younger students are less complex. The camps are fun, educational, and unlike other local opportunities. Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Future directors and actors will shine in this popular camp. Stop-motion animation, Foley art, camera shots, scene blocking, editing, and more are explored as campers make an orginal production from start to finish. The cost of this program is $220 for Edison Ford members and $250 for non-members. Spots are available for 6-8 age group only! In order to protect the campers and staff, several important modifications have been made. • All camps will run at less than 50% capacity. • Per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations, camp sign-in times will be staggered: ages 6-8 from 8:45 to 9 a.m. and ages 9-12 from 9 to 9:15 a.m. Sign-out times: ages 6-8 from 3:45 to 4 p.m. and ages 9-12 from 4 to 4:15 p.m. • Students who are able to do so will wear masks while in the classroom. We will allow for breaks from the mask in limited safe outdoor situations and for of course water, snack, and lunch breaks (and as needed). Social distancing guidelines will be maintained whether students are wearing masks or not, and whether they are indoors or outdoors. The mask should be washed regularly at home. If your camper is unable to wear a mask for any reason, please let us know. • Camp sign-in will take place in a car line rather than inside the museum. Each camper will receive a brief symptom and temperature check before exiting their vehicle. No campers experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 will be allowed to enter camp. • Group projects will be altered to avoid close proximity and frequent touch surfaces. • Daily cleaning protocols have been greatly enhanced. • Rigorous hand washing and sanitation routines for campers and staff will be in place. • Time spent outdoors will be increased substantially (as weather allows). • Edison Ford staff will wear masks at all times.

On July 24, from 10 a.m. to noon, Edison and Ford Winter Estates will participate in the North American Butterfly Association's (NABA) 45th annual butterfly count. Results of the count help researchers monitor butterfly population trends throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as the effects of weather and habitat loss. The EFWE count includes Lakes Regional Park and Rotary Park to ensure coverage of 15 miles. Butterfly spotters may participate at any of the three locations. For anyone wishing to create a butterfly garden, a NABA-certified butterfly demonstration planting is viewable in the Garden Shoppe and both nectar and host plants are available for purchase. To participate in the count, all butterfly enthusiasts must register with Lisa at lwilson@edisonford.org before July 17. The fee is participate is $5 per person, which covers the required fee EFWE pays to NABA. Experience is helpful, but not required, as groups will include both beginners and seasoned butterfly enthusiasts. Those with less experience can help record data or take photos. Butterfly spotters should be prepared to walk outside for at least two hours in hot, humid weather. All participants should wear a hat and sunscreen, and bring drinking water. The total number of participants will be capped at 50, to allow for social distancing. For everyone's safety, EFWE employees will be wearing masks and all participants will be encouraged to wear masks.
